Adding Fresh Flowers to Your Wedding Hair

It’s your big day. Add some fresh flowers to your hair for a little something special on your wedding!

What fresh flowers are the best to use in your hair?

When thinking about what types of flowers to add to your hair, you’ll want to consider two things: weight and hardiness. Is the flower going to be heavy and wilt within an hour? Or is it going to be light enough in your hair to not weigh it down and will it look good for the duration of the wedding? Or at least the photos…

My favorite flowers for hair:

  • Dahlias (small pompom variety works best!)

  • Alstromeria

  • Freesia

  • Delphinium

  • Lisianthus

  • Cosmos

  • Crocosmia

  • Spray Roses

  • Hydrangea

  • Marigold

  • Yarrow

Flower Crowns

A popular option for the flower lovers! Flower crowns are usually a mix of greens and blooms that pair with the other florals in your wedding. They are incredibly time and labor intensive and need to be made early on the morning of your wedding. Because of this, pricing usually ranges from $85 for a simple greenery one and from $175 for a floral one. Be sure that your hair is styled in a way that allows for a crown (read: communicate with your hairstylist!)

Partial Floral Crown

This style is designed onto a headband and can be placed at the front of the head like a flower crown, or on the top of the head, like a head band. The flowers themselves are fragile, but the headband makes the overall design feel much more secure than a regular flower crown.

These are an easy DIY craft, especially if you’re using dried flowers! All you’ll need is:

  • dried flowers

  • hot glue gun

  • headband (preferably a fabric one that matches your hair color!)

Floral Afro

Go big or go home! A floral afro is not only unique, but a fun alternative to having a wedding bouquet. This can be designed by your florist or hairstylist on the day of the wedding with either natural hair or a wig. Be sure to communicate with your hairstylist about this and factor in enough time for this to be finished before photos.

Adding Fresh Flowers into your hair

Depending on what you need, flower stems can be directly placed hair or secured with a bobby pin. Your florist may wrap the stems in wire and floral tape to keep the flowers fresh and sturdy throughout your wedding day. Often, one stem can provide lots of flowers to use in your hair! Flowers like delphinium, spray roses, and dahlias can have multiple blooms and buds to adorn your hair with.
